Japanese te-form rules
The te-form (て形) is the connector of Japanese - requests, progressive tense, permission and clause-linking all build on it. The rules depend only on the verb's final syllable, so the chart below covers every verb in the language. Each example is generated by the same engine that powers the app's conjugation trainer.
Verb te-form rules

What the te-form unlocks
- 〜てください: polite requests (待ってください, "please wait")
- 〜ている: progressive and resulting states (食べている, "is eating")
- 〜てもいい: permission (帰ってもいい, "you may go home")
- 〜てはいけない: prohibition (走ってはいけない, "you must not run")
- Linking clauses: 朝起きて、顔を洗って、出かけた ("got up, washed my face, and headed out")
